My Life Story

My name is Oleksandr Frolov and I am a professional percussionist. I was born and raised in a small city called Avdeevka in Ukraine.

I started my music career as a singer in a small local band at the age of 18 with my brother. But at that time, I did not think that music would become a big part of my life. I played just for fun.

As time goes by, I began to like it more and more, especially after some successful performances at various small events. I realise that sharing energy with the audience through my music and receiving their appreciation and applause is one of the most pleasant feelings in life.

Eventually, my music interests diversified into more rhythmic instruments. I fell in love with percussive instruments. The African drum Djembe became my new passion. During that period, I juggled both my university studies and learned how to play percussion at the same time.

After a few years of practice, I played in different drum circles. In 2013, I became a member of the biggest drum band in my region <<BARABANDA>>. My confidence in my music and performing skills gradually increased as I played more with them.

I also started to teach on the side since 2012 and created a small African drum school in my hometown called <<Drums Spirit>>. From this experience, I learned that teaching is the best form of lesson. The more I taught, the better I played.

In 2015, my partner Dima and I started a project called <<Rhythm and Drive>> in Moscow. It was my first time combining the different skills I have - performing, teaching and coaching. The aim of Rhythm and Drive was to show people that drumming is fun and universal. We did this through performances and team building activities. In the span of a year, we had clients ranging from events management to software companies.

However, over time, I noticed that when I played percussive instruments, I was missing the melody... which is why when I first saw the Handpan, I immediately fell in love with it. I understood this wonderful instrument is exactly what I need.

That is when I started my journey in becoming a solo artist, Handpan teacher and member of the band <<Spacemonk>>. In 2017, we released our first multi-instrumental album ''My cities'', where our soundtracks combined Handpan, Bansuri flute, guitar, Djembe and tongo.

Today I have more than 10 years of experience playing percussion and 3 years in playing the Handpan.

"Music is how your feelings sounds like.
Do the things you love is only the way to live your life properly.
